The Sofa of Confluence

Numerous sofas look like they are one piece of furniture while, in fact, dividing into several pieces. Now there’s a sofa that is the opposite.

Design—and fashion—are circular in nature. Trends come, and go, and then come again.
So it is with the Murphy Bed, that bane of 1970s studio apartments. After a 30 year hiatus we are in the midst of a revival of beds that fold down from a wall. Except now a Murphy Bed is as likely to fold down from a ceiling or emerge from the back of a desk. And instead of the ugly wall monstrosity that reveals a lumpy mattress, today’s Murphy Beds are sleek, elegant and comfortable.
The difference between modern Murphy Beds and those of yesteryear has lead at least one website to call for these hidden beds to be called something else. “Flying beds” it suggests. Whatever moniker you want to use for them, here are some designs that caught Spot Cool Stuff’s eye:
There are lots of sofas beds these days that look okay, but most have that damned bar that cuts up into your back when you try to sleep on them. The Book bed from Italian designer Flou does not transform between sofa and bed via the traditional fold out model. Instead, the seat part of the sofa is comprised of three sturdy mini-mattresses. When it is time to sleep on the sofa, wheel out the base, unpile the small mattresses and arrange them in bed form. The Book sofa comes in a variety of styles, including one with retro arm rests (above) and adjustable head-board (below, after the jump).
When buying a shelf system you usually have to choose between good design and portability. Swiss designer Thut Möbel developed a shelf unit with both qualities. Collapsed the unit is a mere 24 cm (9.5″) tall. Expanded you set the distance between the six shelves at 33 cm (13″) or 28 cm (11″). Available in an untreated, black or natural wood finish.
We are surprised at how often a gorgeous (and expensive) home pool is cluttered by a plastic (and cheap) lounge chair. For an elegant lounger to have pool side — or in the garden or out on the lawn — there’s the Balu bed, part of Mazuvo’s woven furniture line. The Balu comes with weatherproof fabric, washable pillows and a natural looking plastic mesh construction that makes it durable enough to keep outdoors for prolonged periods of time.
The humble bench has become cool with this fabulous design. Artist Pablo Reinoso started with a regular bench and then extended the boards out to one side creating the illusion of wet paint dripping over the edge and then crawling up onto a wall. Reinoso regularly shows his work at galleries around Europe. Click here for the his exhibit details and see below for more photos.
Look cool both indoors and outdoors while napping on your Sushi Daybed from Vivavi. Made of hand-woven water hyacinth (a fiber from Asia) wrapped tightly around a durable rattan, this bed can live out on your patio or accent an interior room. Available with either a cotton or Polyurethane plastic cushion.

Sure, it looks cool. It also looks like it might be fragile and uncomfortable. It is neither! The spoon lounge from Vivavi is manufactured from soft vines, firm on the back but with enough give to feel luxurious. The vines themselves ares wrapped around steel wiring. The Spoon Lounge is one long-lasting piece for your home. And like everything Vivavi sells it is eco-friendly.
