The Apartment Building of 1,000 Different Windows

In some cities it seems like all the apartment blocks look the same. At the Waldspirale building, in Darmstadt, Germany, everything is different.
The obvious difference is the Waldspirale’s Russo-Persian-Dr. Suess inspired architecture. The facade of the building is a colorful stucco with wavy tiled lines that might or might not demarcate between the building’s 12 floors. Also, the entire building is in a U shape, built around a children’s playground and an artificial lake. But what really makes the Waldspirale different is in the details. Each of the building’s 105 units has a unique front doorknob. Each of the building’s 1,000 windows are distinctly shaped. And some of those windows have a tree growing out of them, making the Waldspirale one of the most arboreal, as well as unusual, apartment buildings in the world.
